About Me

Me in my office/studio. I work out of a small bedroom in our one-story house in Spanaway. I'd love to have a big studio, but I make do with what we have.
These children have received a good education because of Hope Boarding School and Myanmar Hope Christian Mission. Learn more: https://myanmarhope.org/

Hello, I am Charles Cherry

(But all my friends and family call me Chuck, so please do.)

I am a (mostly) self-taught watercolor painter focusing on painting the beauty of creation.

I say "mostly" because I have not learned this on my own. I have had many artistic influences, from books, DVDs, and YouTube videos, to a few in-person three and four day classes. I do take responsibility, however, for my mistakes and failures. These are certainly my own and are not a reflection on those greats upon whom I have leaned over the past few years.

I came into watercolors somewhat late in life, in my mid-50s. I had done some acrylic painting in high school and college, but then didn't do any artwork until 2013 or so, when I finally gave in to MaryAnn's request that I paint a picture for our wall.

I decided on watercolors because I remember being enchanted by the work of the late Zoltan Szabo, which I saw in a library book when I was in high school. Ever since then I have had a desire to create art like that! And while I'll never be able to paint like Zoltan, I have learned a lot from his books.

(By the way, I was able to find that book in a used book store several years ago. It now resides safe and secure on my bookshelf).

When I picked up the brush again, I made a promise to God that if He ever allowed my paintings to sell, I would donate all of the profits to the ministry of Myanmar Hope Christian Mission (MyHope). I have a good job, and I don't need to sell my art for a living.

Thankfully, many of my paintings have sold, and every penny of the profits is given to MyHope to support the wonderful work being done among the tribal people of northwest Myanmar by Palal and Kikim Khongsai and their army of volunteers.

This website is my attempt to broaden the reach of my art in order that even more people can be blessed by giving to Myanmar Hope and at the same time can enjoy my watercolors.

I hope that my art is able to inspire others to create in the same way that Zoltan inspired me. I also hope that my watercolors are desirable enough that you might want to purchase a painting, a card, or something else created from one of my paintings, in order that even more funds can go toward feeding the hungry, caring for widows and orphans, and educating poor tribal boys and girls.

Thank you for reading and may God bless you.

My wife is my best friend, and also my best critic! I know if she likes something, others will also like it.

The book that started it all for me.
A painting from Zoltan's book.
You can probably see his influence in some of my own paintings.

This is the book that inspired me to watercolors way back in the mid-1970s. The way the colors flowed and blended together seemed like magic to me. I still love Zoltan's paintings, and also the paintings of his protégé, watercolor artist Sterling Edwards, from whom I have learned a great deal.
